A dental bridge is a prosthetic device used to replace one or more missing teeth.

It “bridges” the gap created by missing teeth using artificial teeth (pontics) that are anchored in place by dental crowns on the adjacent teeth or implants. Here’s a breakdown of how it works:

Components:

• Pontics: The artificial teeth that fill the gap left by the missing teeth. They are typically made from materials such as porcelain, ceramic, or metal.
• Abutment Teeth: The adjacent natural teeth or dental implants that support the bridge. These teeth are prepared by removing a portion of their outer structure to allow for the placement of dental crowns.
• Crowns: Caps placed over the abutment teeth to anchor the bridge securely.

Types of Bridges:

• Traditional Bridge: Involves placing crowns on the abutment teeth with a pontic in between.
  Cantilever Bridge: Used when there are abutment teeth on only one side of the gap. The bridge is anchored on one side only.
• Maryland (Resin-Bonded) Bridge: Features a metal or porcelain framework bonded to the back of the adjacent teeth, without the need for extensive tooth preparation.
• Implant-Supported Bridge: Supported by dental implants rather than natural teeth. This type is used when multiple teeth are missing and can offer additional stability.
